What it would be like to be in Diego Garcia While he was stationed in the United States Navy

When I first arrived in Diego Garcia, I didn't know where he was actually? But when I flew to her airport, she had her own one-man show. We had to wait hours, for a guy, to work out a bunch of us. He had to do all the customs forms, and check all the proper paperwork, and he took it very seriously, and it took many hours to get out of the building alone.

I had heard from other guys, that Diego Garcia was one of the worst places you could be stationed. It was considered a difficult task, and very isolated, and counted toward a task twice, which meant, it was so bad of a task, you got credit twice for it. That meant, if you had 1 year of sea duty, you could go here, and it would be considered that you did 2 years and go back to shore sea faster. Everybody wants to be on duty on shore. This island was a tropical island, but it was not a paradise island.

It was largely the whole army, and military support personnel on the island. The island was known for its very deep. It was actually extremely hot, misty and the shark infected. When we got there, there was a group of six of us, all going on the same boat. We were en route to the USS DAVID R. RAY (DD-971) a Spruance class destroyer. But now, that ship was somewhere in the middle of the ocean, and we were trying to catch it.

It was amazing how we had to get to it. A couple of planes, two boat trips, one aboard a civilian ship, and then a helo trip, from boat to ship, in the middle of the ocean, and we finally caught up with him.

Back in Diego Garcia, after we were released from the customs office, we were taken to what looked like a small trailer park. It was small, with white rocks around it, just like a small garden, and a screen door. It was white cabin like the trailers that were in the rows. Each had 6 boys sleep in one unit and had its own bathroom. The six of us were all going on the same boat, so we were all staying in the same unit.

We stayed in Diego Garcia for about three weeks. The next morning we were there, we all went outside to the main white building to see what deer we were going to do for the day, and where our boat was, and when to get on it.

The officer in charge saw one of the boys who was with us, and noticed that he was wearing an earring. He was very mad, he walked upstairs and immediately rattled it from the boy's ear. I can't remember what his name was, but he was like a Torpedo man or Gunner's friend & # 39; and the guy who tore his earrings, was the guy assigning jobs while we were there, and he said, he has a special job for him.

The earring guy got the job of shredding dead coconut trees in the jungle and dragging them back to camp. It was always over 100 degrees there, and that was about the worst job the responsible man could think of our friend. I ended up getting an air-conditioning job at the local airport. I kept records of all their recording, and did office work for them as I waited to start again, as some days they would say our destroyer was going elsewhere, and then some days they would say it was on , but it was always changing.

There was no place to see Diego Garcia do it, it was almost an island of all military type. It was just isolated with sharks in the water and nothing else to do on the island, and if you stayed out for a long time, you would be blushing to death. No bars, only dining halls and an outdoor cinema, showing movies at night. Almost every day, there was a warning not to go in the water, due to many sharks. I had no intention of going into the water there because I had heard from many other guys that Diego Garcia has many sharks, and even just one shark for me nearby, is a lot.

Even to this day, I still don't know much about Diego Garcia, I was there, and besides a lot of COD shipments with airplanes always removing stuff, and getting stuff, and airports going, I & # 39; Still not sure what Diego Garcia is all about?
